Propriety

Gift in Chinese language is the same word "propriety" and "ceremony" and courtesy, which is a mankind imitation, obedience and reverence to the rules of heaven and earth. Thereupon, it is everywhere in this world, stuffed our life countlessly, all long, in the ancient and nowadays, among the noble family, imperial clansman, common people, and from sacrifice to worship to wedding to folk custom. Propriety is a principal that rules everything, blooms everything, and everything is existed because of propriety. Propriety is an order of the world; if no propriety there is no virtue, morality, further more no concordance, further more no order; if no propriety there is no harmonious state, society, and life of people in order. Thereupon, propriety is a foundation for a state, and its people and everything blooming; thereupon each coming one towards us is our guest, ought to get honor, nobility, and highness from us. Let me treat you as polite and courteous as I can.

China has a grand propriety, this is why Chinese was also called "huas xia," of which xia means "grand" and "hua" means beautiful. What calls propriety is a human deed in accordance with the rules of deity. It is impolite not to reciprocate, which is the resource of propriety. What we call the sage is nothing but a person who is acquainted with and behaves under the propriety. In practicing the rules of propriety, a natural ease is to be prized. Man should be conducted by virtues and be ruled by propriety; propriety is reasonable because it is rooted from human feeling. If propriety be promoted by a state, the state must be blooming; if propriety be promoted by a family, the family must be blooming; if propriety be promoted by a person, the person must be healthy in both body and mentality. Otherwise, no propriety, no man's upright life. Do you see all kings in the ancient established his countries on the base of propriety, which is proven by countless documents? Faithfulness and sincerity is the foundation of propriety. In this world there is nothing without propriety. It is the highest governing for everything, thereupon, not to look at anything that is not fit with propriety, nor listen to it, speak it, and touch it. Otherwise you are touching a knife.
